How to Make Perfume Last Longer: 9 Tips That Actually Work
You spray it at 8am. By lunch it's gone.
Or you think it is.
I spent years at Estée Lauder working on fragrance launches, and this is the question everyone asks. Sometimes the scent really is fading. A lot of the time it's still there and you just can't tell. Here's what's actually happening, and what I do about it.
Why Perfume Fades
A fragrance is built in layers. Top notes like citrus and fresh herbs are the lightest and burn off first, usually in 15 to 30 minutes. Heart notes carry the middle hours. Base notes like woods, amber, musk and patchouli are the heaviest and stay the longest.
So a scent that "disappears" has usually just moved from its loud opening into a closer, softer drydown. That's not failure. That's the fragrance doing its job.
1. You're Probably the Last One to Smell It
Your nose gets used to your own fragrance fast. After a few minutes your brain tunes it out, while everyone around you still catches it. Skin-close molecules like ambroxan and Iso E Super are famous for this.
Before you re-spray, ask someone close to you. You're probably wearing more than you think.
2. Don't Be Shy With the Sprays
Most advice says two or three sprays. Not me. I do seven every morning: four on the neck, two on each side, a full spray each time. Then three on the shirt. That's my ritual, and it carries me all day.
3. Start With Moisturized Skin
Fragrance holds better on hydrated skin. Dry skin lets it fade faster. Put on an unscented moisturizer first, then spray. It gives the fragrance something to hold on to.
4. Hit the Warm Spots, and Don't Rub
Body heat lifts fragrance into the air around you. The neck, chest, inner wrists and inner elbows are the spots that work.
And don't rub your wrists together. It's a reflex, but the friction burns off the top notes faster. Spray it and let it dry.
5. Let Your Clothes Do the Work
Fabric holds fragrance way longer than skin, sometimes for days. That's why three of my seven sprays go on the shirt. A collar, a scarf or the inside of a jacket gives you a trail that lasts. Test on a hidden spot first, since some fragrances can mark light or delicate fabrics.
6. Choose Eau de Parfum, and Check the Oil
The more fragrance oil in the formula, the longer it lasts. Eau de toilette is lighter. Eau de parfum is richer and holds longer. Every LIKE85 scent is an eau de parfum: Blind Green and Pop Line at 24% oil, Risky Blue at 22%.
7. Look at the Base Notes
If you want all-day wear, look at what's at the bottom of the fragrance. Woods, amber, patchouli, musk and ambroxan outlast citrus and light florals every time.
- Risky Blue is built on ambroxan and Iso E Super, which cling to skin for hours.
- Pop Line dries down to patchouli and amber.
- Blind Green settles into cypress and white cedarwood.
8. Give It 20 to 30 Minutes Before You Judge It
The opening is just the introduction. As I told Women.com, leave a scent "20 to 30 minutes on skin" before you decide. The drydown is what you actually live with all day.
9. Store It Right
Heat, light and air break fragrance down. Keep your bottles out of the sun and out of the bathroom steam. A drawer or a cool shelf is perfect. And finish your bottles while they're at their best, which is one reason smaller bottles make sense.
Bring It With You
The easiest way to make fragrance last all day is to carry it. A 15ml fits in a jacket pocket or a bag, so a quick spray before dinner takes two seconds. It's also the easiest way to build a small rotation, which I break down in Why You Don't Need a Signature Scent.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS
Why does my perfume disappear so fast?
Usually your nose has adapted to it. The top notes also burn off in the first 30 minutes, leaving the softer base. Ask someone near you before re-spraying.
Does moisturizer make perfume last longer?
Yes. Fragrance holds better on hydrated skin. Use an unscented lotion first, then spray.
Is it better to spray perfume on skin or clothes?
Both. Skin gives you the warmth and the projection. Fabric holds the scent much longer. I do both.
How many sprays of perfume should I use?
More than most people think. I do seven: four on the neck, three on the shirt. Start lower if your fragrance is very strong.
Does eau de parfum last longer than eau de toilette?
Generally, yes. Eau de parfum has a higher oil concentration, so it lasts longer on skin.
